The driver who hit you has nothing. Now what?
Nevada consistently ranks among the worst states for uninsured drivers. When the at-fault driver carries no insurance — or flees the scene entirely — most victims assume there is nothing to recover. Usually, they are wrong.
Uninsured motorist coverage: the policy you forgot you had
Nevada insurers must offer uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage with every auto policy. Many drivers carry it without remembering. It steps in when:
- The at-fault driver has no insurance at all
- A hit-and-run driver is never identified
- The at-fault driver's limits are too small for your injuries
It can even protect you as a pedestrian or cyclist — you do not have to be in your car. And a household member's policy may cover you too.
Two things to know before you claim
First, UM claims put you against your own insurer — who handles your claim with the same skepticism as any other. Second, Nevada deadlines still apply, and late reporting gives them an easy out. Treat a UM claim as seriously as a lawsuit.
