[Las Vegas News] March 16, 2026: Incheon, one of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world

By Chase Jeong

Is the air quality good in Incheon, South Korea?

As of March 16, 2026, at 12:30 a.m. Pacific Time, Incheon, South Korea had an air quality index (AQI) of over 150, which means the air quality is poor and is in the 'unhealthy' range.

These conditions can increase the risk of respiratory disease, worsen heart disease, and impair lung function, especially in children, the elderly, and people with underlying health conditions.

Air quality conditions can change rapidly throughout the day. To check current pollution levels in real time, see Incheon's air quality map.

Although the current air quality is poor, it is worth noting that the average PM2.5 concentration in Incheon in 2024 is 19.1 µg/m³, equivalent to AQI 65 ('moderate') and 3.8 times the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m³.

When will Incheon’s air quality improve?

Hourly forecasts show air quality is likely to improve significantly over the next few hours, falling into the 'moderate' range. Hourly air quality forecast for Incheon, South Korea as of 12:30 AM PT on March 16, 2026. Source: IQAir.

Looking at daily trends, air quality typically stays in the good to moderate range, but today it has spiked to unhealthy levels.

What causes Incheon’s poor air quality?

The worsening air quality in Incheon and the metropolitan area is caused by several factors. Urban emissions from vehicle traffic remain one of the largest causes of fine dust pollution in Korea, followed by industrial activities and power generation sources (1).

These emissions release nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter that accumulate in the atmosphere. Industrial parks across the metropolitan area produce metals, electronics and automotive parts, which also contribute to local emissions. In addition to domestic sources, cross-border pollution also plays an important role.

Studies have shown that 30-50% of Korea's fine dust originates in neighboring countries and travels in westerly winds throughout East Asia. Therefore, a combination of urban emissions, industrial activity, and regional movement of pollutants can cause periodic smog in cities such as Incheon (2).

How can I protect myself from poor air quality?

In particular, just one day ago, on March 15, three Korean cities, including Incheon, Seoul, and Busan, were ranked among the top 10 most polluted cities in the world, causing a stir.
