Nevada law requires all drivers to have liability insurance with $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 in bodily injury coverage per accident, and $20,000 in property damage coverage. Liability coverage applies when an accident occurs. In other words, this only applies if you are responsible for the accident.
However, if the other driver is responsible for the accident, my liability insurance will not help. In this case, the other driver's liability insurance provides compensation for injuries suffered in the accident. Unfortunately, in the United States, there are quite a few drivers who do not follow the law and drive without insurance at all. Or, even if they have insurance, most people think it is a waste of money to pay insurance premiums every month, so they only have the minimum amount required by law, even if they drink $150 for 10 bottles of soju.

So what do you do if you get into an accident with someone who doesn't have insurance? Or what if you get into an accident with someone who only has the minimum insurance required by Nevada law, and the medical bills far exceed that insurance?
To avoid being harmed by uninsured or underinsured people, you can purchase Uninsured/Underinsured-UM/UIM. All insurance companies in Nevada must offer consumers the opportunity to purchase UM/UIM insurance. (Nev. Rev. Stat. Ann. 690.020B(1)).
However, drivers who own a car are not legally required to purchase UM/UIM insurance and can instead opt out of UM/UIM only in writing. Unfortunately, many drivers refuse insurance because they do not understand how important UM/UIM insurance is in the event of an accident.
What is Uninsured/Underinsured (UM/UIM) in Nevada?
UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured) is coverage that a driver can purchase additionally. It is insurance that can be used additionally if the other driver does not have insurance or if the other driver's insurance is better. In many cases, even if I confidently say that my insurance has full coverage, there are many cases where UM/UIM is not available. This is a golden opportunity to get back all the expensive insurance premiums I have paid so far, and it is one of the most necessary types of coverage.
When does uninsured/uninsured (UM/UIM) insurance apply?
If the at-fault driver did not have insurance, you may be eligible for uninsured coverage. And under Nevada law, drivers who are involved in an accident are entitled to underinsured compensation when their injuries resulting from the accident exceed the at-fault party's liability coverage. In short, this is the coverage you can receive if you have received the entire liability limit of the other party.
The following example shows when an underinsured driver's insurance undersigned is triggered. Example)
John gets rear-ended by Steve, who is inattentive as he is texting while waiting at a red light. Steve holds the minimum liability insurance required by the State of Nevada: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. However, after reporting the accident to Park Accident Law Firm, John suffered $30,000 worth of damages, $28,000 in medical bills and $2,000 in lost wages. Steve's insurance company paid John $25,000 in compensation at the request of our law firm (Parke Law Injury Law Firm 702-389-8888), but to make up the difference, they received $25,000 in UM/UIM from John's insurance, along with $25,000 from Steve's insurance, for a total of $50,000 in compensation.
Accidents have numerous variables and unpredictable outcomes. Among them are the severity of injuries suffered in the accident and the amount of insurance purchased by the at-fault party. Since these two things can hardly be known or predicted before an accident occurs, I think the best way is to purchase sufficient UM/UIM insurance and receive sufficient compensation for your injuries regardless of the limit.
