After an accident, this scene plays out all the time. The other driver steps out of the car and says: I'm fine, you can just go.
In that moment, relief washes over you. What a relief — no complicated process, no hassle. So sometimes both drivers simply part ways. But this is actually the most dangerous moment of all, because fine right now and fine later are two entirely different things.
A few hours later, or the next day, the other driver's story can suddenly change: they are hurting because of the accident, and they want to go through insurance. But now you have no way to reach them — you never exchanged information. It can also cut the other way: you are the one who starts hurting later, and you have no idea who the other driver was. Either way, you can end up in a situation where there is nothing you can do.
That is why, no matter how minor the accident seems, there are three things you should always secure:
- The other driver's license
- Their insurance information
- Photos of the vehicles
